October 2010 –  In bar and restaurant settings, the more time spent serving customers, the more profitable the operation. But for The Blind Pig Pub in Austin, Texas, efforts to operate by this credo were once thwarted at every turn. Instead of pouring drinks for customers, bartenders often wasted precious minutes processing credit cards through standalone terminals–a series of steps that were not only labor-intensive, but error-prone. Reconciling sales from the establishment’s 10 old-fashioned cash registers each day was also a slow, complex endeavor.

Management turned to Jumpware, Inc., an Austin, Texas-based point of sale VAR and solutions provider that caters primarily to the fine dining, quick service, bars and delivery service sectors of the food and beverage industry. The company specified a technology package centered around its own Jumpware point of sale/back office software and the StealthTouch-M5 15” all-in-one touch computer from Pioneer POS. Jumpware chose the StealthTouch-M5 for its durability, reliability, and its versatility. Powered by Intel’s Atom, the unit is available up to Core 2 Duo 2.5GHz. Configurable to meet end-users’ specific application requirements and budget, the Stealth-M5 can be set up to run as diskless and fanless thin client, which increases its lifespan by eliminating problems with grease and dirt accumulation. Integrated add-on options for the StealthTouch-M5 terminals include a customer display, integrated mag stripe reader and biometrics.

A total of 10 POS stations, each comprising of a Pioneer POS Stealth Touch-M5 unit running Jumpware software, Bixolon thermal receipt printer and a cash drawer from M-S Cash Drawer, were installed at The Blind Pig Pub. The Jumpware software was also deployed on a terminal in the establishment’s back room.

The new POS system now allows the establishment to function with previously unattainable efficiency and accuracy. Bartenders can quickly process credit card transactions from any station, saving time and bolstering both accuracy and productivity by eliminating the need to capture and enter transaction data via a separate device or share terminals among employees. In addition, end of day sales reconciliation can also be quickly handled from any POS station.

“Using this solution, employees have more time to devote to customer orders, resulting in increased sales and profitability,” said Jean-Louis DeHoux, President of Jumpware. “The fact that customers can start a tab with a bartender working at any station, then request drinks from any other bartender in the bar while still paying a single check at the end of their visit, pushes sales, efficiency and profitability envelopes even further.”

Easy installation and training rank among other benefits afforded by the system, DeHoux added. The bar is divided into three distinct areas. Jumpware representatives deployed the system in one area at a time over a period of three slow weekdays so the pub could be ready with a fully tested configuration for the busy weekend ahead. Management training and menu entry took a few hours while employee training only took about 15 minutes.

“The Blind Pig Pub was up and running with the POS system the very first day, and has been benefiting from it ever since,” DeHoux concluded. “As for Jumpware, we have had 100% return on our hardware and installation cost and are receiving recurring revenues from the credit card processing.
