June 2012 – The Clark County School District is the 5th largest school district in the United States. The southern Nevada based PK-12 school system was founded in 1956, combining 14 independent school districts all into one. The district has grown by leaps and bounds, especially over the last decade and now employs 15,000 teachers educating well over 300,000 students.  A school system of that size staff and such a large enrollment requires a massive network of cafeterias to meet the food demands required by over a quarter million students. Not only is the district responsible for the operation of the cafeterias, but the backend warehousing network that literally feeds the school system on a daily basis. With that many famished adolescents, efficiency is key, so naturally, the Clark County School District Food Service Technology Group required the most modern and best in class POS hardware solution that only Pioneer POS could provide.

Due to the fact that since the districts old POS system had extremely poor reliability and customer service from the previous hardware supplier, Clark County looked for immediate help partnering with Denver based Macro Solutions Group. This was a natural fit with Macro’s familiarity and past experience in government agencies, fast food chains, and national retailers. The software supplier that Macro Solutions Group used is nationally known as the food nutrition specialists called MCS Software, based in Mandeville, LA.  Specializing in food-based menu planning, the MCS MSchool Point-of-Sale system has essentially any feature you could ever want or need in a school food service environment, and is extremely flexible solution that makes it easy to manage student purchases and payments. With such flexibility requires a hardware terminal that is compact and most importantly durable, making it a perfect combination running on the Pioneer POS StealthTouch-M5.

To put it simply, Clark County needed efficient processing of orders and payment in the district’s school cafeterias, and that’s exactly what they got.

The StealthTouch M5 is a 15″ all-in-one touchcomputer powered by Intel’s Atom, available up to Core 2 Duo 2.5GHz. The Stealth-M5 can be set up to run as a diskless and fanless thin client, reducing dust and grease intake, and improving the life of the terminal. Connectivity consists of Intel 10/100/1000 BaseT network, 6 USB, 4 Serials, and 24-volts powered USB for devices such as a printer. With its compact footprint, the M5 takes up little countertop space and can easily be mounted on the wall or VESA pole. Additional features of the StealthTouch-M5 include WiFi wireless network, credit card reader, magnetic stripe reader, biometric fingerprint reader, integrated customer display, integrated barcode scanner, CD/DVD drive, privacy filter, and even webcams.

Since the MCS Software is known for “no lost transactions and no interruptions of POS systems, even during network outages”, and the system supports multiple input methods integrating perfectly with Pioneer POS including barcode and magnetic stripe ID cards, palm vein and fingerprint scan biometrics, operator touchscreen or keyboards that can search by ID, name, or photos. Utilizing the palm scan technology, MCS Software allows students to check through food service lines in 2 seconds with 98% identification accuracy. Additional features include integration with reimbursable-meal vending machines, medical and allergy alert messages, and real-time communication and synchronization with the central office. MCS also has a very easy to use interface which designed to reduce transaction time and keep cafeteria lines moving, which is exactly what Clark County needed. The Pioneer POS StealthTouch-M5 terminals and the MCS software combination allowed for the systems to easily handle such a colossal food service effort on a daily basis.

Rick Keagy, President of the Macro Solutions Group concluded that “The Pioneer equipment has greatly decreased the amount of downtime experienced by their cafeteria users.  In addition, Pioneer’s customer support has significantly improved the repair turn-around time on those units that do occasionally fail”. With each installation only taking less than one week per cafeteria, the Macro Solutions Group was able to not only keep the business of the Clark County School District, but also maintain and grow the relationship over the past 8 years, being their strategic partner for one of the largest school districts in the United States.
